Regional Youth Council
The first West Regional Bureau installed
During Minister Mounouna Foutsou’s working visit to the West Region to launch the civilian events marking the 2024 National Day, the first ever Bureau of this entity was officially installed on 13 May 2024 in Bafoussam, the regional capital.
Regional Youth Councils (RYCs) are set up to support, boost and make the most of young people’s civic participation in local public affairs. In practice, they offer spaces where young people can learn, consult and contribute to the political life of the State.
A total of 90 youths make up the West Regional Youth Council, in accordance with the sociological components of that region. Among these 90 youths, 20 were drawn from traditional authorities and 70 from other groups. During their installation ceremony, the RYC President, Mr. Luc Sielenou, expressed the feelings of his peers in these words: The youths of the West Region consider themselves honoured by this involvement in local affairs”. He also reminded them of their voluntary commitment, which should focus on the common good and patriotism. According to the President of the West Regional Council, Mr. Jules Hilaire Focka Focka, this patriotism also implies that RYC members will stand as a one against all the threats undermining peace, such as hate speech and manipulation, among others.
Speaking on the importance of the pledge made by these youths with regard to their voluntary commitment, Minister Mounouna Foutsou said: “Don’t forget that you are volunteers. In other words, you have freely chosen to devote part of your time, your energy, your intelligence, your patience and your creativity in the service of collective development, with no expectation of remuneration”.
In conclusion, the Minister assured the regional youth councillors of his availability, and that of his Ministerial Department and staff, to accompany, supervise and support any initiative that can contribute to the development of Cameroon’s youth.
